1. Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus infection - Report #1
Source: decubitus on coccyx
Gram stain report: Many WBC’s; many Gram positive cocci in clusters seen in Figure 10
Organism: Staphylococcus aureus
Heavy growth
Antibiotic MIC* SENS**
Ampicillin/sulbactam <4 S
Cephalothin <2 S
Ciprofloxacin <0.5 S
Clindamycin <0.5 S
Erythromycin <0.5 S
Oxacillin <2 S*
Penicillin G >16 R
Tetracycline <1 S
Trimeth-sulfa <10 S
Vancomycin <0.5 S

*MIC = the concentration of antibiotic that the organism is susceptible in micrograms. The rule of thumb is, if the physician can reach 2 - 4 times the concentration of the MIC levels in blood, then the antibiotic should reach proper tissue levels.

*Note: The antibiotic oxacillin is susceptible. This is not a MRSA.
